Therapy Dogs and Service Dogs ARE NOT the Same Thing. . .
Both play a valuable role, and both of these roles are very different. It is important to know the difference between a therapy dog and a service dog not just because they perform different jobs, but also because you would interact with each differently.
Service Dog: A service dog is trained to provide specific medical assistance to ONE individual. Such tasks include medical alerts, mobility assistance, seeing eye for the blind, and much much more. When you see a dog that is a service dog (as it will usually be labeled on a vest), you should NEVER talk to, pet, stare at, or distract the dog in any way. There is a very important reason for this – if you distract a service dog, then this dog may miss a vital signal to provide a medical alert for a seizure or other episode, or miss a cue to assist with fall risk, and so on. When others distract a service dog, they are putting the handler in jeopardy without realizing it. An individual with a service dog, whether you can see it or not, has a disability that requires constant help from the dog. Be aware that a service dog is not a pet, and pets are not service dogs. All dogs trained in Paws and Stripes are service dogs, not therapy dogs. Therapy Dogs: A therapy dog is trained to be very social with one or more individuals at one time. Therapy dogs are taken to hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, orphanages, and other such facilities for patients and residents to interact with the dog. They spend time with people who are ill, elderly, in recovery, or otherwise in need of comfort. Therapy dogs are very well socialized and trained to be handled by people of all ages, sizes, and physical conditions. Thus, their job is to provide comfort to many, rather than perform specific tasks for one. Also, a dog MUST BE trained to be either a service dog or a therapy dog. A dog is not a service or therapy dog simply because someone claims it is. Certain skills, socialization, and good health (up to date vaccinations for starters) must be in place in order for the dog to be deemed a service or therapy dog. It all started when in the 70′s my dog Nate got out for the umpteenth time. I went to the Royal Oak Animal shelter, to bring him home. My cat Paleface, Noir’s mommy was there, and was going to be euthanized. I took her with my dog Nate home. I had her for 22 years when she passed on. My Paleface, I told her all my problems nightly. Her son Noir, was born in my son’s bed the first day he went to kindergarten. Named Noir because he was black, we did not want Smokie, Midnight etc. He has been thru a lot, 3 moves and his family coming and going in his life. He is now blind and diabetic. He purrs when I pick him up, still likes to eat, and meows out loud every so often! I love him and every day is a blessing as long as he feels well. In honor of his birth from a shelter cat, his momma ,, please give to Puffy Paws of Englewood, Fl.. Puffy Paws does not euthanize, ever. Puffy Paws, take all kinds of kitties, sick, old, blind and other unwanted kitties. Please, Please let them become part of your giving life. http://www.puffypawskittyhaven.com/id313.html

Please see new adopted mom Julie Love’s petition. This following is her plea…….
Please sign above petition on Change.org
The previous owner of my dog, Nala, was charged with 2 felony and 2 misdemeanor counts of Causing Animal Cruel Death Suffering and Pain. He also had her brother, who passed away from neglect, starvation and abuse. His next court hearing is July 18th, 2012. He was charged with Animal Cruelty in 1970 – the Lee County court dismissed his charges. I am petitioning for him to receive the maximum penalty for his abuse of Nala and her brother in this case. I will forward all signatures to the judge in the case prior to the hearing. Thank you, Anders Herjander and Julie Love
Please pass along to 3 people and ask them to pass along to 3 people and so on…

Reblogged from Hiddendisabilities's Blog:
Hayliegh and I had another great day in sunny San Diego. While we were out we met another person who is struggling w/ hidden disabilities or invisible disabilities. We haven't counted how many people "The Hayliegh Project" has helped over this last year. We have helped many people in the area's of housing, legal help whether it is for social security, fighting an over pay mistake by social security office by filing appeals.
